Manchester Mystics made it two-from-two in the WBBL Trophy North Group as Amy Browne led them to a 72-60 home win over Team Northumbria. It’s the first time, in three attempts, that Mystics have beaten this opposition on their home floor in the WBBL.
Browne hit 5/7 three-pointers (71%) on her way to 26 points, and was supported by a haul of 21 points, on 76% shooting, from Dominique Allen, who also grabbed eight rebounds.
Those two got to work early, Allen registering her eighth point of the initial exchanges as a Browne triple made the score 13-8. But the visitors scored the next five, and led at the outset of the second stanza by 22-18.
The decisive run swiftly followed as Mystics registered the next 13 points, five more from Allen, and held Northumbria scoreless for four minutes, Rheanne Bailey adding a four-point play to help the score to 31-22.
The lead was double-digits by the half when Browne hit a triple with the final play, to make it 38-26; and it was stretched further when she added five more in a run of eight unanswered points for 55-34 midway through the third quarter.
Northumbria did make one last push, opening the fourth period with an 11-3 burst as Kara Bonnenberger scored seven points. Browne was there to halt that run, although the visitors did get as close as 68-60 heading into the final minute as Alison Gorrell, their leader, scored her nineteenth point of the game.
But Mystics held them off, Georgia Jones and Allen scoring late on, for a third straight win that sees them level with Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters at the top of the group, while inflicting a third straight defeat on their visitors.
