The Weekend Wrap Week 1

  Monday, September 25, 2017

Donte Gittens scored 29 points in his first competitive game for the Manchester Magic as Paul Middleton's team began the defence of their National Trophy title with a comfortable 77-46 win at the Lancashire Spinners on Saturday.

American Gittens will face stiffer challenges this season but looks at home already and will cause opposition defences problems with his agility and attacking play.

The Magic now face Derby Trailblazers in their second and final pool game at the Amaechi Basketball Centre on Saturday (6.30pm tip). The winner will progress to the semi-finals.

Magic's U16s (88-27) and U18s (85-42) both recorded comfortable wins at North Premier rivals Cheshire Phoenix on Saturday, while Mystics U16s opened their Premier campaign with a 71-54 victory at Sheffield Hatters.

The Mystics, who face even longer trips to the likes of Brighton and Ipswich this season, attempted to back that up with another away win on Sunday but were narrowly beaten 41-39 at Nottingham Wildcats. The two teams meet again at the ABC this weekend.

Magic's Division Four team, made up almost entirely of U18 players, looked to be heading for victory at home to Manchester Giants 2 in the first round of the National Shield, but they were eventually beaten 58-52 in a hard-fought contest.

At U14 Conference level, a new-look Magic 2 showed plenty of grit and talent in a 68-42 defeat at North West 1 rivals Manchester Giants Blue.
