  Tuesday, December 05, 2017

Donte Gittens scored 26 points as Manchester Magic got back to winning ways at local rivals Lancashire Spinners.

The American also collected 9 rebounds as the Magic won 79-58 for their fifth victory of the season in Division One.

Kayin Darbey also had a big impact on the game, with 14 points and 9 rebounds.

In a tight contest at the Castle Leisure Centre in Bury, Magic were always in control but needed a dominant fourth quarter (28-11) to see off their hosts.

Magic now face a long trip to Southampton on Saturday for their National Cup semi-final against Team Solent Kestrels.

A 21-point haul from Lauren Thomas-Johnson was not enough to stop Manchester Mystics slipping to a 82-63 home defeat to Leicester Riders in the WBBL.

The loss leaves the Mystics fifth in the table, with a gap now opening up to the top three.

Dominique Allen (15 points and 8 rebounds) and Rheanne Bailey (14 points and 7 rebounds) also made sizeable contributions against Leicester, with Georgia Jones adding 8 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists.

Next up for the Mystics is an away game in Scotland against Caledonia Pride on Saturday.

There were some notable wins for the club's junior National League sides at the weekend.

Trafford Magic U16s boosted their play-off chances in Premier North by recording a fantastic 75-73 victory at City of Birmingham.

The win lifted Trafford up to sixth in the table, just two points adrift of COB in fourth.

Magic's two U18 teams were also victorious. Magic's U18 Premier side ran out comfortable 92-49 winners at home to Cheshire Wire for their fifth league win of the campaign, while Trafford Magic U18s made it four wins out of four in the Conference with a 72-63 victory at North West rivals Barrow Thorns.

There were wins, too, for Magic's U14 first and third teams. The first team made it eight wins from nine games with a 75-70 win over Premier North rivals City of Leeds Gold, while Magic's third team recorded a 75-44 home win over Cheshire Phoenix Juniors II in North West II.

Magic's U14 second team lost 69-52 at Cheshire Phoenix Juniors in North West I.

The Mystics were also in action at the weekend. The U18s beat Newcastle Eagles 60-22 to ensure they remained in the hunt for honours, the U16 first team suffered a 57-55 defeat at Southend Swifts, while the U14 second team slipped to a 60-26 loss at Hatfield Fliers.
