Academy Update 2

  Thursday, November 8, 2018

A barnstorming 32-16 first quarter for Newcastle Eagle Academy set the foundations for a hard-fought 74-73 win over the travelling Manchester Magic Academy.

The hosts raced out to a 15-3 lead in the first five minutes behind a solid defensive display, as Eagles centre Jeremy Lievin did the damage on the offensive end with 11 first quarter points. Seven points from Magic captain Luke Gordos helped stem the flow somewhat, but the first 10 minutes ended with the Eagles enjoying a 16 point lead.

Manchester upped their game in the second quarter behind 11 points from Ty Jordan, winning the quarter 11-17 as Newcastle still led heading into half-time, 43-33.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair, after the Magic blew the game open with a seven point run to open the third quarter. Malachi Boakye-Yiadom came to life in the third with 11 points, after being held scoreless for the first 24 minutes of the content. Tosan Evboumwan paced the home side, chipping in seven points of his own, but the hosts would go into the forth down by five, 52-57.

The final stanza was a real battle as Nathaniel Klutz hit a big three down the stretch, only to be answered by Adam Fetherston with one of his own for Newcastle. With 16 seconds left on the clock, Tosan Evboumwan finished through contact to get an and-one, which to put Newcastle by a single point. Manchester had one last shot to win it, but the desperation three from Boakye-Yiadom did not fall under heavy pressure.

The Eagles were led by 21 points from Tosan Evbuomwan, as Theo Riley added 15 and Jeremy Lievin had 13. Ty Jordan paced the Magic with 23 points, with Josh Grant chipping in 13 and Malachi Boakye-Yiadom adding 11.

Manchester will look to bounce back when they face James Watt College next week, while Newcastle will travel to Derby Trailblazers Academy.
