Mystics advance to next round of WBBL Cup

  Saturday, October 15, 2016

Manchester Mystics advanced to the next round of the WBBL Cup by overpowering Caledonia Pride 69-48.

In a strong defensive performance – the second time that they have held a team below 50 this season – Mystics were led on the offensive end by 16 points each for Jo Clayden and Georgia Jones. Defensively, Clayden also had three steals and three blocks, with Manchester scoring 37 points from turnovers and snatching 19 steals.

It was a high-scoring opening between two sides that had lost their opening league games last week, they could hardly be separated through the early exchanges, before a Rachel James three-pointer gave the hosts a 27-25 first quarter lead.

In the second stanza, the Mystics upped their defensive intensity, holding the Scottish-based side to just two points in 10 minutes. They won the period 12-2, sparked by Clayden’s three-pointer as she had seven points in the quarter. Jones also connected from long-range to send the lead into double-figures at 37-27.

The Mystics gave the Pride no way back in, particularly after they clamped down defensively again midway through the third period, keeping their visitors scoreless for another five minutes. Rheanne Bailey hit a triple and Nicola Welling scored four as the hosts pushed their lead through 20 points at 56-33 in an 8-0 run.

Caledonia edged back late on, winning the fourth quarter, as all 12 Mystics players saw court time, with all but two scoring.
